Quick answer: Mutual fund distributor empanelment means registering yourself with each AMC (fund house) so it can accept your business and pay you commission. An ARN alone is not enough. First get a valid NISM Series V-A certificate and your ARN. Then fill in each AMC's empanelment form, online on its distributor portal or on paper at its branch, with your ARN card, NISM certificate, PAN, KYC/KYD proof, a cancelled cheque and the signed code of conduct. AMCs usually charge no fee, and approval usually takes a few working days per AMC. Don't want to do this 40+ times? Join a distribution platform that already holds the empanelments.

What is empanelment in mutual funds?
Empanelment: the process by which an AMC adds a registered mutual fund distributor (an ARN holder) to its list of approved distributors, after checking their documents. Once empanelled, the AMC accepts that ARN on transactions and pays it commission.
Think of it in two layers. Your ARN is your licence from AMFI: it says you are allowed to distribute mutual funds. Empanelment is your agreement with each fund house: it says that fund house will work with you and pay you.
So the full path to becoming a working MFD is: pass NISM Series V-A, get your ARN, then empanel with AMCs (or join a platform), and only then start placing client transactions.
Is AMC empanelment mandatory for mutual fund distributors?
Yes. AMFI's guidance for MFDs is clear: getting an ARN does not by itself give you the right to sell any mutual fund's schemes. You must be empanelled with the AMC before you do business for it.
- ✓ Empanelled with the AMC: your ARN is accepted on that AMC's transactions and you earn trail commission on them.
- ✓ Not empanelled: that AMC has no agreement to pay you. Business you send it may not earn you commission.
- ✓ Employee with an EUIN: you don't empanel yourself. Your employer's ARN is empanelled, and you sell under it. See EUIN registration.
Who is eligible for AMC empanelment?
Check these four before you fill any form. AMCs reject applications that miss one.
- You hold a valid NISM Series V-A certificate. Not passed yet? Read the NISM 5A exam guide.
- You hold a valid ARN from AMFI. An expired ARN cannot be empanelled.
- Your KYC is validated and your KYD is complete. Since 1 October 2024, KYD happens through Aadhaar OTP during ARN registration, with no separate biometric visit.
- You have a bank account in your own name (or the firm's name) for commission payouts.
Individuals, proprietors, partnership firms, companies and banks can all be empanelled. Non-individuals need extra documents, listed below.
Documents required for AMC empanelment
Most AMCs ask for the same set. Keep self-attested scans ready, and you can reuse them for every AMC.
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| Empanelment form | The AMC's own form, filled and signed, with a photo |
| ARN card | Self-attested copy; must be valid on the date you apply |
| NISM V-A certificate | Self-attested copy |
| PAN card | Name must match your ARN and bank account |
| KYD acknowledgement | Download from the AMFI portal run by CAMS (some AMCs check it themselves) |
| Bank proof | Cancelled cheque or bank statement showing name, account number and IFSC |
| Code of conduct declaration | Signed undertaking to follow the AMFI/SEBI code of conduct for intermediaries |
| GST certificate | If you are GST-registered; otherwise a non-registration declaration |
| Firms only | Board resolution or partnership deed, authorised signatory list, firm PAN, rubber stamp |
The exact list varies a little by AMC, so read the checklist on the form you download. For GST rules, see GST for mutual fund distributors.
How to get empanelled with an AMC online: step by step
Most large AMCs now let you empanel online. The steps look like this on almost every fund house website:
- Go to the AMC's website and open the Distributor Corner, Partner Corner or "Become a Distributor" page. For example, HDFC Mutual Fund has a "Get empanelled" option in its Distributor Corner.
- Enter your ARN and PAN. The AMC pulls your details from AMFI's records and checks that your ARN is valid.
- Fill in your details: name, address, contact, bank account for commission, GST status and nominee if asked.
- Upload the documents from the table above.
- Accept the code of conduct and terms, usually by e-sign or OTP, and submit.
- Wait for verification. The AMC checks your ARN, KYC, bank account and compliance record, and may email a query.
- Get your login. Once approved, you receive access to the AMC's distributor portal, where you see your commission (brokerage) structure, client transactions and payouts.
Prefer paper? Download the AMC's distributor empanelment form, fill it in, attach self-attested copies and submit it at the AMC's branch or investor service centre.
How long does AMC empanelment take, and is there a fee?
Fee: AMCs usually don't charge anything to empanel you. Your costs are the NISM exam and the ARN fee, paid before this step.
Time: usually a few working days to about two weeks per AMC once your application is complete. No rule fixes this time; each AMC works at its own pace. Most delays come from a query on your documents.
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| NISM V-A result to ARN in hand | About 3 to 4 weeks |
| Fill and submit one AMC's form | 15 to 30 minutes online |
| AMC verification and approval | A few working days to about 2 weeks (estimate) |
| Empanelling with 10 to 15 AMCs yourself | Several weeks of follow-up |
How many AMCs should a new MFD empanel with?
There are 40+ AMCs in India. You don't need all of them on day one. Start with the AMCs whose funds you will actually recommend:
- ✓ The large fund houses that most clients already know and ask for.
- ✓ AMCs your existing clients already hold, so you can service their folios.
- ✓ AMCs with the categories you plan to offer: index funds, debt, hybrid or SIFs. SIFs need a separate addendum; see how to sell SIFs as a distributor.
Most new MFDs begin with 10 to 15 AMCs and add more as clients ask. Each new AMC means one more form, one more portal login and one more commission statement to track.
Can you sell mutual funds without empanelling with every AMC?
Yes, by choosing how you work. There are three routes:
| Route | Empanelment work | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Direct with each AMC | One form per AMC, one portal per AMC | Large MFDs with an operations team |
| Exchange platforms (BSE StAR MF, NSE NMF II) or MF Utility | One place to place orders, but you still need AMC empanelment to be paid | MFDs who want a single order screen |
| Distribution platform | One onboarding; the platform already holds the AMC empanelments | New and solo MFDs who want to start fast |
Compare the exchange options in BSE StAR MF vs NSE NMF II vs MFU.
What happens after AMC empanelment?
- ✓ You get the commission structure. Each AMC shares its trail rates per scheme on its distributor portal. See how MFD commission works.
- ✓ Commission is paid monthly into the bank account you gave, on regular-plan investments carrying your ARN.
- ✓ File the annual self-declaration by 30 June every year. Miss it and commission is withheld from 1 July.
- ✓ Keep your ARN renewed. Empanelment works only while your ARN is valid. Renew it every 3 years; see ARN renewal.
- ✓ Update changes with every AMC. A new bank account, address or GST number must reach each AMC you are empanelled with.
- ✓ Due diligence as you grow. Under SEBI rules, AMCs do extra due diligence on larger distributors, for example those with more than ₹100 crore of non-institutional AUM or more than ₹1 crore a year in commission across the industry.
Why does AMC empanelment get rejected or delayed?
Five problems cause most queries. Fix them before you submit:
- Name mismatch across PAN, ARN card, bank account and NISM certificate.
- Expired or near-expiry ARN or NISM certificate.
- Bank proof that doesn't show your name and IFSC, or an account in someone else's name.
- Unsigned pages or missing self-attestation on paper forms.
- Missing firm documents, such as a board resolution or authorised signatory list.
If you hear nothing in two weeks, email the AMC's distributor support team with your ARN and application number.
