what is AMFI

Last updated: 30 October 2026 · By Yashna Bhuwania (ARN-325085)

Quick answer: AMFI full form is Association of Mutual Funds in India. It is the industry body of all SEBI-registered mutual fund companies (AMCs), set up as a non-profit on 22 August 1995. AMFI is not the regulator; SEBI is. AMFI's job is to set good practices for the industry, register mutual fund distributors (it gives out the ARN and EUIN), publish daily NAVs and monthly industry data on amfiindia.com, and run investor awareness campaigns like "Mutual Funds Sahi Hai". When an ad says "AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor", it means that person holds a valid ARN from AMFI.

हिंदी में: AMFI का फुल फॉर्म है Association of Mutual Funds in India

What is AMFI in mutual funds?

AMFI (Association of Mutual Funds in India): the industry body of India's mutual fund companies. It sets standards of good practice, registers mutual fund distributors and publishes industry data, working within the rules SEBI makes.

Think of AMFI as the mutual fund industry's own association, like a chamber of commerce for fund houses. Every AMC that runs mutual fund schemes in India is a member. Together they agree on common practices, so investors get the same basic experience whichever fund house they choose.

AMFI was incorporated on 22 August 1995 as a non-profit company (under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956, now Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013). It earns no profit from investors and does not manage any money itself.

Is AMFI a regulator? AMFI vs SEBI

No. This is the most common mix-up. SEBI is the regulator of mutual funds in India. It makes the law. AMFI is the industry body that helps put SEBI's rules into practice.

What are the functions of AMFI?

AMFI's work falls into six areas:

  • ✓ Registers distributors. Every mutual fund distributor needs an ARN (AMFI Registration Number) from AMFI, and every employee who advises clients needs an EUIN. Applications are processed by CAMS on AMFI's behalf.
  • ✓ Sets a code of conduct. AMFI's code of conduct for intermediaries tells distributors how to behave: no mis-selling, suitable advice, full disclosure of commission.
  • ✓ Publishes NAVs and data. All AMCs post their schemes' daily NAVs on AMFI's website. AMFI also publishes monthly AUM, inflow and SIP data for the whole industry.
  • ✓ Classifies stocks by size. Every six months AMFI publishes the list of large-cap (top 100), mid-cap (101 to 250) and small-cap (251 onwards) companies that all funds use.
  • ✓ Issues best-practice guidelines to AMCs on operations, disclosures and how distributors are paid.
  • ✓ Runs investor awareness. Its best-known campaign is "Mutual Funds Sahi Hai", launched in 2017, plus investor education programmes across the country.

Who are the members of AMFI?

AMFI's members are the asset management companies (AMCs) registered with SEBI to run mutual funds, such as SBI Mutual Fund, HDFC Mutual Fund and ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund. There were 49 members as of August 2025, and the number grows as new fund houses get SEBI licences.

Investors and distributors are not members. A distributor is registered with AMFI (through the ARN), which is different from being a member.

What does "AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor" mean?

You see this line on ads, visiting cards and apps. It means the person or firm holds a valid ARN from AMFI and may sell regular plans of mutual funds and earn commission from AMCs. To get one, they must pass the NISM Series V-A exam and register with AMFI.

How to check if a distributor is genuine:

  1. Ask for their ARN. It looks like ARN-123456.
  2. Open AMFI's Distributor Corner and use "Find a mutual fund distributor".
  3. Search by ARN or name. Check that the name matches and the ARN is valid, not expired.

An AMFI-registered distributor is not the same as a SEBI-registered investment adviser (RIA). A distributor earns commission from the AMC; an RIA charges you a fee and advises on direct plans.

What is AMFI's role for mutual fund distributors?

If you are an MFD, AMFI is the body you deal with most. It controls your licence to earn:

WhatAMFI rule
ARN registration₹3,000 + GST for individuals, online only. See ARN registration
EUIN for employees₹1,500 + GST, mapped to the employer's ARN. See EUIN registration
ARN validity and renewalValid 3 years; renew with ₹1,500 + GST after NISM re-exam or CPE. See ARN renewal
Annual self-declarationDue by 30 June every year, or commission is withheld from 1 July
Code of conductBreaking it can lead to suspension or cancellation of the ARN

Note that an ARN alone doesn't get you paid: you also need to be empanelled with each AMC. Read the AMC empanelment process and how to become a mutual fund distributor.

How to check mutual fund NAV on the AMFI website

  1. Go to amfiindia.com.
  2. Open the NAV section and choose Latest NAV (or NAV history for past dates).
  3. Select the mutual fund (AMC) and the scheme. Make sure you pick the right plan: direct or regular, growth or IDCW.
  4. The NAV shown is for the last business day. AMCs upload it every business day evening.

The same website also has monthly industry data, the large/mid/small-cap stock list, the distributor search and AMFI's circulars.

What is "Mutual Funds Sahi Hai"?

"Mutual Funds Sahi Hai" is AMFI's investor awareness campaign, launched in 2017 and paid for by the industry. You have probably seen it on TV, cricket broadcasts and social media. It explains mutual funds and SIPs in simple words and tells people to invest for the long term.

It does not recommend any fund house or scheme. Its job is to grow trust in mutual funds as a whole, which is one reason monthly SIP flows have grown to a record ₹32,490 crore in September 2026.

Where to complain about a mutual fund or distributor

  • ✓ Problem with a fund, folio or transaction: write to the AMC or its registrar (CAMS or KFintech) first.
  • ✓ Not solved in time: file on SEBI's SCORES portal, and then SMART ODR if needed.
  • ✓ Mis-selling by a distributor: complain to the AMC and to AMFI, quoting the distributor's ARN. AMFI can act against the ARN.
