Quick answer: To sell mutual funds to clients in India, you first need a NISM Series V-A certificate, an ARN from AMFI, and empanelment with each AMC whose funds you sell. Then, for every client: (1) ask about their money, goals and investing experience, (2) check their risk level and suggest only suitable schemes, (3) explain how each scheme works and its risks, (4) tell them the commission you earn, (5) complete KYC and the form with their own details and your ARN and EUIN, (6) start small, often with a SIP, and (7) review with them regularly. Never promise returns, never offer rebates or gifts, and always sell the regular plan. Good service brings referrals, and referrals bring your next clients.

What do you need before you can sell mutual funds?

  1. Pass NISM Series V-A (Mutual Fund Distributors). See the NISM 5A exam guide.
  2. Get your ARN from AMFI. Individual ARN holders get an EUIN with it. See how to get AMFI certificate.
  3. Get empanelled with each AMC. AMFI says an ARN alone does not let you sell any fund house's schemes. Business under the ARN of a distributor who isn't empanelled goes into the Direct Plan, with no commission. See MFD empanelment.
  4. Set up a way to transact, such as BSE StAR MF, NSE NMF II, MF Utilities or a distributor platform. Compare them in BSE StAR MF vs NSE NMF II vs MFU.
  5. Use the right name. Show "AMFI-registered Mutual Fund Distributor" with your name and ARN on your cards, website, app and messages. Don't use words like "Adviser", "Wealth Manager" or "Consultant" unless you are a SEBI-registered Investment Adviser.

How to sell mutual funds to clients: step by step

Step 1: Understand the client. Before you name a single fund, ask about their income, savings, loans, existing investments, goals, time horizon and past investing experience. AMFI asks MFDs to collect the client's financial status, investment experience and investment objectives to judge suitability.

Step 2: Check their risk level. How would they feel if their investment fell 20% in a bad year? Match that to the scheme's riskometer. A nervous first-time investor saving for a goal two years away does not belong in a small-cap fund. See client risk profiling.

Step 3: Suggest suitable schemes only. Link each scheme to a goal: emergency money, a child's education, retirement. AMFI says financial incentive must not be the reason you recommend a scheme. Pick for the client, not for the commission.

Step 4: Explain how it works and what can go wrong. Walk them through the scheme's key features, costs and risks from the SID and KIM. Say clearly that mutual funds don't guarantee returns and the money they put in can go down.

Step 5: Tell them what you earn. AMFI requires MFDs to disclose the commission they receive on the schemes they recommend, and to tell clients which fund houses they work with. Clients trust you more when you say it first.

Step 6: Complete KYC and the form properly. Do the KYC and in-person verification as AMFI and the KRA require. Fill the form with the client's own email and mobile number, never yours. Put your ARN and the EUIN of whoever sold the scheme.

Step 7: Start small and simple. For a first-time investor, a monthly SIP in one or two schemes is easier to start and stick to than a large lump sum.

Step 8: Review and follow up. Meet clients at least once a year, and call during market falls. This is where most clients decide whether to stay with you. See the annual client review framework.

How to explain mutual funds to a new client

Keep it short. Most first-time investors need four ideas, not forty.

  • ✓ What it is: many people's money pooled together and invested by a professional fund manager.
  • ✓ Why invest: to reach a goal that a savings account or FD alone may not reach after inflation.
  • ✓ The risk: the value goes up and down with the market. There is no guaranteed return.
  • ✓ How to start: a small monthly SIP, raised as income grows.

When you compare, compare like with like. AMFI says comparisons must be with similar schemes and with complete facts. Don't set an equity fund's best year against an FD's rate as if they carry the same risk.

How to handle common client objections

Client saysAn honest answer
"Is my money safe?""It's not guaranteed. The value moves with the market. That's why we match the fund to how long you can stay invested."
"FD is better, it's fixed.""FD is fixed and safe. A mutual fund can grow more over long periods, but it can also fall. Let's use each for the right goal."
"The market is too high, I'll wait.""No one can time it. A SIP spreads your buying over months, so you buy at different prices."
"Why not buy direct and save cost?""Direct plans cost less. With a regular plan you pay for my help choosing, reviewing and keeping you on track. Here is what I earn."
"What if I need the money?""Most open-ended funds can be redeemed any working day. Some have an exit load if you leave early, and tax may apply. Let's keep emergency money separate."
"My friend got 30% last year.""Past returns don't promise future returns. Let's look at the risk that came with that 30%."

How to sell mutual funds online

  1. Use a platform built for distributors so clients can complete KYC, sign up and invest from their phone.
  2. Show it is a regular plan. AMFI says any digital platform an MFD offers must clearly state that the scheme is a Regular Plan that pays commission to the MFD, with a visible link to the commission rates and to the scheme documents.
  3. Keep your name, ARN and tagline on your website, app and social media profiles.
  4. Use the AMC's own marketing material. Don't design your own scheme ads or use an AMC's name or logo without its written approval.
  5. Post responsibly on social media. Share education, not return promises or rumours about any AMC or other distributor.

What you cannot do when selling mutual funds

These come from AMFI's code of conduct for MFDs. Breaking them can cost you your ARN.

  • ✓ Promise or hint at returns. No guaranteed, assured, indicative or "expected" returns for any scheme.
  • ✓ Offer rebates or gifts. You can't pass back commission or attract clients with gifts or vouchers.
  • ✓ Churn or split. No needless switches to earn more commission, and no splitting applications.
  • ✓ Sell unsuitable schemes or hide risks, costs or facts.
  • ✓ Deal in direct plans for your clients. See can a distributor sell direct plans.
  • ✓ Fill your own contact details in a client's form or change anything in it without their instruction.
  • ✓ Call yourself an adviser or IFA without SEBI registration.
  • ✓ Bad-mouth any AMC, scheme or other distributor, in person or on social media.

Common mistakes new distributors make

  • ✓ Leading with last year's top performer instead of the client's goal.
  • ✓ Selling too many schemes to one client. Two or three well-chosen funds are easier to track.
  • ✓ Going quiet after the sale. Clients who hear from you only when you want new money leave in the first market fall.
  • ✓ Skipping the paperwork trail. AMFI expects you to keep records of KYC and of what you discussed about suitability.
  • ✓ Letting your ARN lapse. Business under an expired ARN goes to the Direct Plan, and trail on old business is held until you renew. See ARN renewal.
